You really know that people or ideas have reached a meaningful level of familiarity when they make an appearance in pop culture. But when jokes fly, what does that mean?
I caught a commercial the other day for that TV series 30 Rock. One of the characters is trying to start a secret Santa gift exchange at the office and right away the objections came.
“But (so and so) is Jewish.”
“And Jenna practices The Secret.”
Cut to Jenna, who recites her positive affirmation “I’m going to marry George Clooney!”
Whoaaaaahhh! Yeah, Jenna is portrayed as the stereotypical dumb blonde, a self-centered and flighty actress. Jenna, simplistic follower of the Kabbalah, possibly involved with Scientology, is of course the one on the show who would embrace something as ridiculous as the ideas presented in the The Secret, right?
Is that how pop media views The Secret?

The last week or so has been somewhat of a wild ride with this blog. I’m technically oriented, but by no means a wiz at blogging software and databases. Unfortunately I probably know just enough to be dangerous, which led to the events of the past week. In the process, though, I’ve learned some valuable lessons.

Do affirmations really work? By themselves, not always. But I’m going to share a simple exercise that may work for you. Several years ago I added it to my morning meditation routine and I believe that my health has benefited as a result.
The exercise incorporates immunics, a process that is based on the same principles that are behind pendulum divining and applied kinesiology (muscle testing). Pendulum divining is a method of amplifying bodily responses from your subconscious (or, if you prefer, God or the Universe). Applied kinesiology likewise is based on your body’s reaction, but involves a weakening or strengthening of muscles in response to positive or negative thoughts, words, or objects that are presented to it. Immunics uses these principles in the process of removing the causes of illnesses.

Or maybe it only took three days, depending on how you look at it. All I know is that last month I wasn’t even thinking that I would be getting another vehicle, didn’t really need one nor had any clue what type I would want, and today I’m driving a 2001 Lexus IS300.
I debated whether to even work on this post. I don’t advocate a materialistic attitude, but I do believe that this is a classic case of manifestation and that there are some lessons here that will help others understand the law of attraction and the manifestation process.

Being featured on the Oprah Winfrey show was one enormous milestone for the movie The Secret.
But in the area where I live, I caught another significant milestone that demonstrates how far the Secret has come in gaining popularity - its appearance in a Frys’ Electronics ad in the paper.
For those not familiar, Fry’s Electronics is a huge chain in the western United States. With its headquarters in Silicon Valley, Fry’s is the mecca for electronics and computer hobbyists. But they also sell appliances, music, and DVDs, so it’s an all around popular place to shop.
So now this vehicle for getting the message of the Law of Attraction to the masses has made it to a Fry’s ad, right alongside PC video games and computer software.

Yeah, we’ve all heard how stress does all kinds of harm to the body, such as increasing blood pressure and increasing the risk of heart attacks.
Now researchers are pointing to a more subtle high-risk factor - feeling that life treats you unfairly.

Proponents of the Law of Attraction often make it sound like it’s the answer to any problem you may have. While I do agree based on my own experiences that you can effect changes in your life that way - it is only part of the solution.
One example is in the matter of relationships.

OK, I admit it. I’ve been known to watch Dr. Phil on occasion. It’s not appointment TV, but between 8 and 9 o’clock in the evening when I’m relaxing after a day of work and then dinner, it can be entertaining.
So I caught part of last night’s show that featured a husband who was obsessed with spying on his wife. Spy-cams, GPS - whatever technology is available, he used it. He just didn’t trust his wife, although she had not had an affair - or at least that wasn’t revealed in the show. After he admitted to yet another way that he had spied on her, and said he just feels that she is having an affair and is going to leave him, Dr. Phil turns to the guy and says “Have you ever heard that old saying, ‘What I fear I create’?â€
